Descaling your kettle is more important than you think!

Do you know that feeling? You fill the kettle, and then you see bits of brown rust and limescale floating around in your cup. With every sip, you taste a slight “mineral flavor” – not what you want when enjoying a relaxing cup of tea. In this blog, we’re joining forces to tackle stubborn limescale. I’ll share 10 smart and sustainable tips for a sparkling clean kettle, with a cheerful twist (a little mum-talk and lots of green ideas!). That way, you can once again enjoy crystal-clear boiling water without splashes or streaks.

Preparation: what do you need?

Place the kettle in the sink and check that it is unplugged (safety first!). Empty the kettle and let it cool down. Some models have an internal filter: remove it and descale it separately. Gather your cleaning supplies and add a lemon, a little white vinegar, and possibly a tablespoon of baking soda. Also grab a soft brush or sponge and, if needed, a kitchen cloth. Now we’re fully prepared to tackle the limescale enemy.

  • Tip 1: Protect your hands by wearing cleaning gloves when cleaning with hot water – handy and safer for mum’s skin!
  • Tip 2: Save plastic by buying vinegar in large refill bottles. That way, you don’t have to keep using new small bottles.

Step 1: Descale with lemon or vinegar

Fill the kettle one-third full with water and squeeze in the juice of one lemon (or add two lemon slices to the kettle). Bring the water to a boil and let it sit for at least 20 minutes. The acid in the lemon helps loosen the limescale. Want something even more powerful? Mix ½ cup of white vinegar with ½ cup of water and bring it to a boil. Let the liquid bubble gently for a few minutes, then pour it away carefully.

Tip 3: For truly stubborn limescale, you can add a spoonful of baking soda after pouring away the vinegar mixture, then boil the mixture briefly once more. You’ll see it gently bubbling – a cleaning miracle in action! Pour this mixture away too once the bubbles stop.

Step 2: Scrub and rinse

After pouring it away, a white film usually remains inside the kettle. Refill it with clean water and gently scrub the inside with a sponge or soft brush. Focus on the bottom, where limescale accumulates most. Scrub Daddy comes in handy here: it is soft in warm water and firm in cold water – ideal for fishing out limescale with its bristles. Rinse the kettle thoroughly several times until all the bubbles are gone and the water remains clear.

  • Tip 4: Use The Pink Stuff paste or Fabulosa Stainless Steel cleaner on a cloth to make the outside of the kettle sparkle. This also helps prevent buildup there.
  • Tip 5: Never fill the kettle all the way to the rim. This prevents boiling water from splashing into the lid or drip tray, where buildup can quickly appear.

Step 3: Shine with Fabulosa (Pear Drops)

Is your kettle made of stainless steel? Then Fabulosa Shiny Stainless Steel (Pear Drops) is just what you need. Spray a little onto a dry cloth and wipe the outside clean. It gives a beautiful mirror shine and leaves a pleasant pear fragrance in your kitchen. Your kettle will sparkle like new!

  • Tip 6: After cleaning, leave the kettle to dry with the lid open in fresh air. This allows the inside to ventilate properly and helps prevent new (micro-) limescale buildup.
  • Tip 7: Don’t pour the cooled wastewater away without a second thought. Use it to water your plants – limescale is not harmful to most garden plants, by the way.

Sustainable habits

Now that the basic work is done, let’s think about the long term. Switch the kettle off immediately after use, or put it on a timer. Empty the inner kettle straight after boiling – this leaves less mineral-rich water behind to boil again. If possible, install a simple water filter or softener: this helps prevent much less limescale from building up in your appliances. And finally, use eco-friendly cleaning products in the kitchen. For example, vinegar as dish soap or baking soda as fabric softener.

  • Tip 8: Regularly wipe the outside of the kettle with a slightly damp, eco-friendly cleaning cloth. This prevents dust and limescale residue from building up.
  • Tip 9: Rinse the drip tray under the lid once a week. This prevents dirt or mold from accumulating there too.
  • Tip 10: Occasionally run a dishwasher cycle with cleaning vinegar (without cutlery) and let the dishwasher fill with steam. This gives even limescale residue in the pipes less chance to build up.

FAQs

How often should I descale my kettle? That depends on the hardness of your water. If you already see a white rim after a few weeks, plan a descaling treatment every 1–2 months. In areas with extremely hard water, you may even need to do it monthly.

Which is better: lemon or vinegar? Lemon has less odor and leaves no aftertaste, but vinegar can be more powerful against old limescale deposits. Both work – simply choose whichever you have on hand. Don’t forget to rinse thoroughly after cleaning!

Can I prevent streaks in the kettle? Make sure you never leave the kettle empty after use, and dry it with a clean cloth. Once it has been properly descaled and dried, the chance of new stains will also be much smaller.

Don’t give limescale a chance and enjoy pure water! For a beautifully smooth finish, try Fabulosa Shiny Pear Drops.
