Laundry Routine & Laundry Perfume: 10 Tips for Brilliantly Clean Laundry
A mother armada in the laundry room, that much is certain! 😅 Every week, a mountain of dirty laundry sits waiting in the corner of the bathroom. But with the right approach, doing the laundry becomes a piece of cake. In this blog, I’ll give you 10 smart and sustainable laundry tips. From choosing the best detergent to adding a touch of luxury with Fabulosa laundry perfume. Grab the laundry basket, straighten those socks and let’s go!
Tip 1: Sort your laundry (yes, really do it)
Nothing is more frustrating than pink socks mixed in with the whites (been there, done that!). Always start by separating colours and levels of dirt. Make separate piles: whites, light colours, dark clothes and towels. This prevents your favourite pair of jeans from turning everything a different colour. Washing bed linen with dirty socks? It’s best to wash them separately to prevent smells from spreading. Bonus tip: Fill the machine by colour. Your washing machine works most efficiently with a full drum (both in terms of energy and water consumption!).
Tip 2: Check your pockets and fasten everything
This sounds logical, but believe me: I know the discussion. We always allow fifteen minutes of trash-talking before everyone heads to the washing machine. “No more phones, Mum can call non-stop!” 😉 Take everything out (coins, tissues, old chewing gum 💔), because the spin cycle can become blocked or your little sock may come out of the wash damaged. Zip bags up, fasten buttons, and never find a wet receipt in your wallet again. Safe and seriously effective laundry action!
Tip 3: Choose your detergent wisely
Which detergent? There are countless options, but I like to choose natural products. For example, try The Pink Stuff organic laundry detergent or their colour-safe laundry gel. These gentler formulas are kind to your clothes and the environment. Pay attention to the dosage: less than you think is often enough. Put detergent in the drawer, and for washing powder, a quick spin in the detergent compartment also helps it dissolve properly. Tip: Don’t set the washing machine too hot (30°C is often enough, unless the laundry is heavily soiled)! This handy set also contains detergent and stain remover together, ideal for busy mums.
Tip 4: Keep stain remover within reach
Honestly, my child has just been playing Tarzan and decorated his shirt with banana stains and splashes of mud. 😲 Pre-treating the stain first is the secret. Spray or dab a little The Pink Stuff Oxi Spray (safe for coloured laundry) onto the stain and leave it to soak in for a minute. For truly stubborn dark stains, I sometimes use Oxi White powder (for white laundry). Then simply put the garment in the machine with the rest of the wash. Hello, spotless baby vests and tuxedos!
Tip 5: Laundry perfume: how and when to use it
The magical finishing touch to the laundry cake: laundry perfume! 🤩 No wonder I’m a fan of Fabulosa Fresh Linen or Precious Gold. This is not fabric softener, but a fragrance enhancer: you add it during the rinse cycle. Simply add 10–15 ml of perfume alongside your usual detergent routine (tip: check the bottle for the red line). Your laundry will feel wonderfully soft and stay fresh for longer, without sticky residue on your clothes. Tip: Skip the pre-wash or quick wash, otherwise you’ll wash the perfume away straight away!
Tip 6: Washing temperature and programme
Many people think that washing at the highest temperature gets clothes the cleanest, but the truth is that it’s not always necessary. T-shirts, underwear and everyday laundry come out perfectly clean at 30°C to 40°C. Heavily soiled or stained linen can be washed on a 60°C programme (if your washing machine has one). Always use a full, but not overfilled, drum – washing as much fabric as possible in one load saves water and energy. Because yes, sustainable washing means fewer machine cycles (and a happier wallet). 🤑
Tip 7: Dry your laundry as eco-friendly as possible
Hang as much as possible outside or indoors on a drying rack. It’s fresh and saves electricity (sorry, tumble dryer!). In spring and summer, I even use dryer balls in the machine, so a drying session doesn’t cause too many creases. If you’re caught out by freezing rain, use the dryer at 40°C or select the “wool” programme – it’s gentler on your laundry and saves you a full drying cycle. For extra fragrance, you can use Fabulosa dryer sheets or add a splash of laundry perfume to the ironing water for cotton clothes. (And pssst, put those socks that always go missing in a laundry bag, otherwise your dryer will turn everything into a one-sock paradise!)
Tip 8: Clean the washing machine
Nothing is more annoying than a musty smell coming from your machine. Running an occasional empty wash with hot water and a little cleaning vinegar is helpful, but even better is using a washing machine cleaner once a month.
